Community is more than just a group of individuals—it is the foundation of human connection, a place where people find belonging, support, and the strength to overcome life’s greatest challenges. For those experiencing homelessness or resettling as refugees, community plays an essential role in helping clients achieve stability, independence, and healing. At Catholic Social Services (CSS), we witness daily the incredible ways that community transforms lives.

Homelessness and displacement often lead to feelings of isolation, disconnecting individuals from society and diminishing their sense of purpose. This isolation can make it difficult for people to regain control over their lives and move forward. However, communities can break down these barriers by offering support, understanding, and a sense of connection. When people connect with others who share similar struggles, as well as organizations that offer resources, they being to find confidence in themselves and hope for the future. This sense of belonging is critical for social and emotional wellbeing.

At Catholic Social Services (CSS), we offer a wide range of opportunities that focus on the social and emotional wellbeing of our participants, although sometimes, the most impactful experiences come from something as simple as an art class. One guest shared that the connection she found through art was a turning point on her journey from homelessness to stability and housing, highlighting how community can have a profound impact on a person’s life.

Sister Lucia’s art classes, offered at our shelters and 3rd Avenue Resource and Navigation Center, give participants the opportunity to explore their creativity and express themselves in a safe and supportive environment. For many, art becomes a powerful way to communicate emotions that are difficult to put into words. In these classes, individuals can reconnect with themselves and others, as they build relationships with their peers. The act of sharing their artwork and discussing the creative process allows participants to feel heard and valued, strengthening their sense of community.

The pride participants experience seeing their creations showcased in our facilities and other  public spaces not only enhances their confidence but also reinforces that their contributions are meaningful and appreciated. This recognition can be especially transformative for those who have felt marginalized or overlooked. Through their art, participants become part of something larger – a community that celebrates and honors their unique perspectives.

Ultimately, Sister Lucia’s art classes are a reminder of the profound impact that connection, expression, and recognition can have on a person’s journey toward healing and stability.
