World Refugee Day is an international day designated by the United Nations to honor refugees around the globe, celebrating the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution. This year, Catholic Social Services celebrates refugees with a month of events – capping off with our annual celebration of World Refugee Day on June 27, from
4 – 7:30 p.m. at Grow North Farm.

The Anchorage Assembly announces a resolution acknowledging June 20th as World Refugee Day.

Friday, June 14: Welcome Corps Discussion
Are you interested in becoming a Welcome Corps sponsor? Join Alaska Office for Refugees for a discussion on Welcome Corps and information on sponsoring a refugee. The event is free, and pre-registration is required. Food will be provided for in-person attendees.

Thursday, June 20, ALL DAY: Official international date for World Refugee Day
Friday, June 21, 11:30-12:50 pm: Anchorage Assembly Food for Thought Workshop
Chair Constance invites Refugee Assistance & Immigration Services (RAIS) to present on the important work done by the program. The Workshop will focus on the momentum being built by nonprofit organizations to strengthen Alaska’s underserved communities. In addition to RAIS, we’re also inviting the Alaska Black Caucus, Umoja Coworking Space and Choosing Our Roots. Each group will have 10 minutes to present and then there will be a round table discussion.

Catholic Social Services marks World Refugee Day with a celebration to honor the journey and resilience of the refugee community and recognize the incredible contributions and the positive impact they’re making in Alaska. Join us to celebrate our refugee community with food, dance, awards, and a variety of fun activities!
