HUGSS & Coats for Kids is a project to help prepare children from low-income households for school. With your help, we plan to provide basic school supplies and coats to 5,500 kids on August 15th, 2012.

Who is eligible?

  • Children from low-income families enrolled in the Anchorage School District (grades K-12).  

When can I come?

  • August 15th - One Day Only - 9:00 a.m. - 1 p.m. or 3 p.m. - 7 p.m.   

Where can I get an application?

  • Applications are only available on distribution day (Aug. 15th) at Clark Middle School.

What paperwork do I need to bring with me? 

  • The only requirement is that you know the correct spelling of the student's name, the grade they will be entering and the school they will be attending.

Do I need to bring my children?  

  • No, it is not necessary to bring your child if you know the correct spelling of the student's name, the grade they will be entering and the school they will be attending.

 

Donor/Volunteer 

May I host a collection drive at my work or church?

  • Yes! Download the collection drive tool kit here. It contains a flyer for your collection container, event program flyers and instructions.  We are encouraging donations of new school supplies. Once the drive is over please bring items to Lutheran Social Services of Alaska at 1303 West 33rd Avenue, Anchorage, AK, 99503 or during July - The Alaska Club, please see details below.  

  • Where can I donate my coats and pencils?
  • Pencils, new coats and gently used clean coats with working zippers can be donated at Lutheran Social Services of Alaska at 1303 West 33rd Avenue and Fireweed One Cleaners (500 Fireweed Lane). After August 13th items need to be taken directly to Clark Middle School for distribution on August 15th.  

How can I make a financial donation to help purchase supplies?

How can I view available shifts and sign up to help?

Tips for Volunteering at HUGSS/Coats - Thank you for volunteering at HUGSS! We will see you at Clark Middle School located at 150 Bragaw Street. We will be hosting a volunteer hospitality room offering snacks and drinks (on Wednesday the 15th only). The only item that can be consumed outside of the hospitality room is water. If you pack a snack please remember to eat it outside or in the hospitality room. Please dress comfortably and bring a minimum of personal belongings with you. Please park near the playing fields (closest to the Glenn Highway) behind the back of the school. You will be entering the door near the gym. It will be marked volunteer entrance. Children are able to volunteer for set-up (accompanied by an adult) on Tuesday, August 14th only. Thank you. 
 

Can I bring my child with me to volunteer?  

  • Volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult and are welcome during set up on on Tuesday the 14th of August. Adult volunteers are needed during distribution August 15th. 

I enjoy knitting, how can I help?

  • Please consider cleaning out your yarn stash and/or knitting hats for the project. Far North Yarn Co. is hosting a HUGSS & Coats hat collection drive. For more information call 258-5648.
